Outdoor Living
Bring the inside out. Montana's landscape is your backdrop.
The Philosophy
Living Rooms Without Walls
In southwest Montana, the outdoors is not a backdrop — it is a room. The Gallatin Range at sunset, the smell of pine after a summer rain, the silence of the first snowfall. People move here because they want to live closer to that. An outdoor living space designed by Ridgeline gives them a way to do it every single day without leaving home.
We design decks, covered patios, outdoor kitchens, and fire features that feel like natural extensions of the home — not afterthoughts bolted onto the back of it. That means matching materials, aligning rooflines, running utilities (gas, water, electrical, low-voltage lighting) during construction rather than retrofitting them later, and engineering every structure to handle Montana's snow loads and temperature extremes.
The goal is always the same: create a space that extends your usable season by months, gives you a reason to step outside on a February evening, and makes your property feel twice as large as the square footage suggests. Bozeman homeowners who invest in outdoor living consistently tell us it is the single renovation that changed how they experience their home the most.
What We Build
Outdoor Spaces
From a simple cedar deck to a full outdoor living suite with kitchen, fireplace, and hot tub surround — we build it all.
Custom Decks
Cedar, ipe, composite, or thermally modified wood. Engineered for 60 lb/sq ft snow loads and built to age gracefully.
Covered Patios
Timber-frame or steel post structures with integrated lighting, ceiling fans, and optional weatherproof enclosures.
Outdoor Kitchens
Built-in grills, pizza ovens, sinks, refrigerators, and stone countertops. Full gas and water plumbing.
Fire Pits & Fireplaces
Gas or wood-burning, built from local stone or weathering steel. The gathering point that extends your season by months.
Hot Tub Surrounds
Integrated decking, privacy screens, and stepped access. Electrical and drainage pre-planned for your specific spa model.
Pergolas & Shade
Timber, steel, or aluminum structures with optional louvered roofs, retractable canopies, and integrated string lighting.
Landscape Integration
Retaining walls, pathways, native plantings, and grade transitions that blur the line between structure and terrain.
Outdoor Lighting
Low-voltage path lights, step illumination, uplighting, and dark-sky-compliant fixtures that respect Montana's night skies.
Montana-Specific
Built for the Climate
Outdoor spaces in Bozeman are not the same as outdoor spaces in Scottsdale. We engineer for the realities of a Northern Rockies environment.
Snow Load Engineering
Gallatin County requires structures to handle 40–80 lbs per square foot of roof snow load depending on elevation. We design to exceed code — because the 100-year storm happens more often than anyone expects. Covered structures use pitched roofs or heated gutters to manage melt-off and prevent ice dams.
Freeze/Thaw Materials
Montana sees 100+ freeze/thaw cycles per year. We specify materials that handle that — thermally modified decking, Montana moss rock rated for exterior use, stainless steel hardware, and concrete with proper air entrainment. No cracking, no warping, no premature deterioration.
Covered vs. Open
We typically recommend a hybrid — a covered zone for year-round use with infrared heaters and wind screens, plus an open zone for summer dining and stargazing. This gives you the most usable square footage across all twelve months. The covered section also protects furniture and finishes, extending their lifespan by years.
